The Kärcher RCV 5 (1.269-641.0) is the top robot vacuum in the brand’s range and cleans hard floors and low-pile carpets on its own. The rotating brush, side brush and fan carry dirt into a 330 ml container with up to 5,000 Pa of suction, and an ultrasonic sensor switches on Auto Boost when it detects carpet. It also mops with a cloth unit and a 240 ml water tank, steering clear of carpets in that mode. It maps the home with LiDAR, and the app lets you set parameters for each room; the dual-laser system with camera recognises flat obstacles such as cables, socks or shoes, and fall sensors keep it away from stairs. Its 5.2 Ah lithium-ion battery gives up to 120 minutes of work, and it can be started from the app, by timer or with the button on the robot.
When choosing a robot vacuum, compare the navigation and mapping system, the suction power, the battery runtime against the size of the home, the type of brushes (rubber brushes tangle less with hair) and, if it mops, how the mop is wetted and cleaned. The charging dock needs a socket and free space at the sides and in front; self-emptying docks use bags or bins that need emptying or replacing, and mop-washing docks have clean and dirty water tanks that are refilled and emptied by hand.
